Eventually that contaminated sea life is caught and eaten by humans, thereby planting the plutonium seed in their bodies to fester there for years until the cancer is detected– in some people.

In addition to sinking the ships, some of them were sold to scrap dealers who cut them up and sold the scrap for playground equipment, among other things.”
